AI is already part of everyday life and work — in search tools, email, recommendations, forms, and decision-making systems — yet it’s often talked about in ways that feel intimidating, rushed, or exclusionary. This session gently strips AI back to what it actually is (and what it isn’t), helping you make sense of it without needing technical knowledge or prior experience.

We’ll explore why fear, scepticism, and distrust are completely normal responses, particularly when technology is introduced faster than people are supported. You’ll look at the difference between being an AI consumer and an AI user, and why most library staff do not need to code, automate, or deeply understand how AI works under the bonnet in order to use it confidently and responsibly.

Crucially, this session reframes AI as a literacy issue, not a tech arms race. The focus is on understanding, judgement, boundaries, and informed choice — rather than speed, hype, or keeping up with the loudest voices in the room.

This session forms the foundation of the AI Literacy & Confidence for Libraries pathway, creating shared language and psychological safety before moving on to practical tools, applications, or policy discussions.
