Artificial intelligence is suddenly everywhere. Alongside the opportunities, there is a great deal of noise, hype and pressure to keep up.

You may feel curious about AI but unsure where to begin. You may have tried a tool and wondered whether you could trust its answers. Or perhaps you feel concerned about what AI could mean for your role, your profession and the people you support.

AI Without Fear offers an opportunity to pause, step back from the noise and develop a calm, grounded understanding of AI.

This is not a technical training session. You will not be expected to learn to code, master a collection of new tools or become an AI expert.

Instead, we will explore what AI is, what it is not and what it means for your work. Most importantly, you will recognise that many of the skills needed to navigate AI are skills you already possess.

You are not starting from zero

AI is not something waiting for us in the future. It is already woven into many of the systems and services we use every day, including:

Search engine summaries
Email suggestions and automatic replies
Library systems and discovery tools
Recommendation systems
Digital platforms and behind-the-scenes automation

Whether you have consciously chosen to use AI or not, you are probably already interacting with it.

This session is not about catching up. It is about slowing down long enough to understand what is already happening around you—and deciding how you want to respond.

AI is not magic

AI can feel impressive and sometimes unsettling, particularly because it presents its answers with so much confidence.

But AI does not think, understand meaning or exercise human judgement. It identifies patterns in large amounts of data and predicts what is likely to come next.

This means its answers can be useful—but they can also be inaccurate, biased, incomplete or misleading.

A helpful way to remember this is:

Sometimes right. Sometimes wrong. Always certain.

During the session, we will take away some of AI’s mystery so that you can approach it with informed curiosity rather than fear.

You are not behind

It can seem as though everyone else has already mastered AI. In reality, many people remain uncertain about what it is, how it works and whether they should use it.

If you feel cautious, confused, sceptical or resistant, you are not failing to keep up. These are reasonable responses to a technology that is developing quickly and often discussed in exaggerated terms.

You do not need to know everything before joining this session. There are no silly questions and no assumed technical knowledge.

This is a literacy shift—not a technology race

The most important skills for navigating AI are not coding or technical expertise. They are:

Critical thinking
Information literacy
Ethical awareness
Professional judgement
Curiosity and thoughtful questioning
Confidence in evaluating information

These are not new skills. They are skills that library, information, education and learning professionals use every day.

AI literacy is, in many ways, information literacy in a new context.

Where we once focused primarily on finding and comparing sources, we must now also evaluate generated answers. We need to ask:

Can I trust this?
Where might this information have come from?
What assumptions is it making?
What could be missing?
Whose perspective is not represented?
How can I verify it?
Would I use this in a professional context?

Your expertise is not becoming less important. It is becoming even more valuable.

AI changes the shape of work

There is understandable anxiety about whether AI will replace people or make existing roles less valuable.

Although AI may change or speed up some tasks, it cannot replace the human qualities at the heart of thoughtful professional practice:

Empathy and connection
Creativity and imagination
Ethical thinking
Contextual understanding
Lived experience
Accountability
Nuanced professional judgement

AI can generate a starting point. A person must still decide whether that starting point is useful, appropriate, accurate and fair.

The work does not simply disappear. It shifts towards interpreting, questioning, refining and guiding.
